Holistic Maternity Support for an Empowering Birth Experience
Rahel's Story
When Rahel reached out at the beginning of her pregnancy, she knew she wanted one-to- one continuous support from a Birth Keeper who could guide her through her first pregnancy.
She connected with me through When Push Comes to Shove (WPCTS) and was
eager to build a strong foundation of knowledge, confidence, and self-trust in preparation for her birth.
From the very start, Rahel was deeply committed to reclaiming her birth experience. She took the time to educate herself, read books, study evidence-based research, and question the mainstream maternity system—all while staying deeply connected to her own instincts and intuition. She and her partner were incredibly invested in the process, and we spent many hours together on phone calls, video sessions, and in-person visits throughout her pregnancy, ensuring she felt fully informed, supported, and empowered.
Rahel’s Words
Testimonial
I had my baby on the 31st of October, in the comfort of our home, a beautiful water birth. I get really emotional saying this, but I don’t think I would’ve had the dream outcome that I had if it wasn’t for WPCTS.
Louise Clay was my Birth Keeper. An unbelievable woman who helped me so much with finding confidence in myself that I didn’t call my midwife to attend in the end. I really didn’t feel I needed the NHS present at that point, and we just had the most transcendental birthing experience. It went better than I could’ve imagined. I went from being labelled as ‘high risk’ and being led down a fearful path to fully trusting in the physiological process of my body and intuition.
There are many doulas out there that I met and spoke with, but it quickly became evident to me that I didn’t need an incense-waving doula. I always knew I needed an empowered, no- bullshit real talker. So much is sugar-coated around birthing, and much of the process
becomes pathologised that it can seem impossible to navigate when pregnant for the first time.
The catalyst for me was a horrible experience talking with midwives after declining to take aspirin every day due to a low PAPP-A result at 12 weeks. After that seed of doubt and fear was planted by the NHS, I wanted to surround myself with a more informed voice. Louise was that voice of reason that I felt I could fully trust in my space. She encouraged us to do the research, to stay empowered, and demystified so many unknowns for me, which helped put me at ease where otherwise I could’ve easily been coerced. The support was always available with regular in-person visits, texts, phone calls, and Zoom calls where needed.
Louise brought a warmth and joyful reassurance that really helped to balance mine and my partner’s energy during our pregnancy.
I realise now how important it was for me to have an incredible Birth Keeper like Lou. She
really helped to shift years of generational trauma and shame around birth for me. I was able to have more open conversations around where the fears stemmed from, and now we have broken that cycle. I hope that we can both inspire more women to take their power back with this positive story.
Thank you to Abigail who pointed me in the direction of WPCTS and to Nickita who recommended Louise to Olmo and me. May this sisterhood continue to grow.
At 36 weeks, we sat down to create an extremely detailed birth plan, outlining every aspect of Rahel’s vision for her birth. This was not just a list of preferences—it was a powerful declaration of self-trust and autonomy.
Together, we explored:
✔ Her ideal birth environment—how to create a peaceful, undisturbed space at home.
✔ How to navigate interventions and medical recommendations, ensuring she knew when and why she might accept or decline them.
✔ The physiological birth process and how to lean into her body’s innate wisdom.
✔ Emotional and mental preparation, helping her release fears and replace them with trust.
Rahel was not just preparing for birth—she was actively reclaiming it, rewriting the story for herself and for the generations of women in her family before her.
On 31st October 2023, Rahel birthed her baby at home, in the water, in complete trust of her body.
Despite being labelled “high risk” by the NHS, she chose not to let fear dictate her journey. By the time labour arrived, she felt so confident in herself and the birth process that she didn’t even feel the need to call her NHS midwife. Instead, she trusted her own body, her partner, and the deep preparation she had done.
With just myself and her partner present, she had the beautiful, physiological birth she had always envisioned. It was more than just a birth—it was a healing experience, a moment that shifted generational trauma and reclaimed birth as a source of power rather than fear.
